The Neon Beat - 10.2.21

On the Neon Beat (Show 62R6)  Mel Carter sings our first fine offering as we open with his 1965 hit single “Hold Me Thrill Me”.  We follow with a standard from 1964 as we “Sing in the Sunshine” with a beauty from Auckland, New Zealand: Gale Zoe Garnett.   A couple of blue numbers follow with Dean Martin doing a smooth alfredo version of “Blue Moon” followed with Leroy Anderson's “Blue Tango”.  Besides Leroy, enjoy more fine period instrumentals with Ferrante and Teicher, Henry Mancini, and Herb Alpert.  Hear great show tunes with Vic Damone with a number from “West Side Story”, Robert Goulet with a song from “Porgy and Bess”, and Ella Fitzgerald with some playful Cole Porter music from “Gypsy”.  We'll team up Tony Bennett and Michael Buble with a popular Duke Ellington standard followed up with some lush music by Nat King Cole singing a song originally done by actress Judy Garland.  We'll track the song “There's a Kind of Hush” by Herman's Hermits, play a song heard in the film “Pinocchio” sung by Barbra Streisand from her first 1964 album, and listen to Steve Lawrence with his hit version of a Carole King song.  More from Vikki Carr, Eddie Fisher and Carly Simon.  Crank and enjoy.

The Neon Beat - 9.17.21

On the Neon Beat (show 61r6)  Sammy Davis Jr begins the festivities with a Broadway selection that went down as a hit song for the man in 1968.  Listen to the song, “I've Gotta Be Me.”  Frank Sinatra takes the stage next for some classic Cole Porter music.  Then we'll let Lady Ella have the mic for “It's Only a Paper Moon” with the Delta Rhythm Boys.  Hear more songs from our stock of singing paisanos including Perry Como, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin with “That's Amore” and a lovely Chicago lady of Italian stock named Joni James with the song, “I Still Get a Thrill.”  We'll spin a WW2 era hit song by the Nat King Cole Trio called “Straighten Up and Fly Right.”  Snap your fingers with a snazzy version of Victor Young's “Around the World” sung by Oklahoman Kay Starr.  Listen to some fine period groups like The Four Aces, The Mills Brothers, and the Fontane Sisters with a song still sung by children to this day.  “Playmates.”  Hear Jimmie Rodgers with a latter 1950's hit song that became the name for a Post breakfast cereal.  Enjoy two film songs.  One sung by Dinah Shore from the film, “The Paleface” and a song by Pat Boone with the title song from “April Love.”  Hop aboard “The “A” Train” as we listen to the orchestra of Bert Kaempfert.  More with Tony Bennett and Michael Buble.  Enjoy the ride!

On the Neon Beat (show 60R6)  We open this hour with a song frequently associated with the Christmas holiday given it's from a film that airs on network television at Christmas.  Listen to Tony Bennett with his jazzy version of the song, “My Favorite Things”.  Listen to more nice stage and film songs this hour including Dionne Warwick with her bouncy version of “Promises Promises”, The Montovani Orchestra with Victor Young's, “Around the World”, and Andy Williams with “The Days of Wine and Roses”.  More film and theatre with the Henry Mancini Orchestra with “The Pink Panther Theme” Vic Damone with a lovely rendition of a song from “South Pacific” and Andre Previn with a lovely version for piano and orchestra of the theme from “Gigi”.  Enjoy what was a surprise hit song during a time of rock n' roll and hair bands as Roger Whittaker sings “The Last Farewell”.  Listen to Barbra Streisand's 1970 chart topper, “Stoney End” followed with a hit version of an old standard as Vic Dana sings “Red Roses for a Blue Lady”.  Follow along (if ya can) with a funny switch-around piece by Dinah Shore called “Sweet Violets” and laugh with Phil Harris as he recommends “44 Sycamore” for a romantic hookup.  Catch a lively jazzy rendition of “Bill Bailey” by Bobby Darin followed by Jo Stafford doing a Broadway number called “The Gentleman is a Dope.”  Hear a sweet song from 1957 sung by Patti Page called “I'll Remember Today” followed with the Les Baxter Orchestra with “April in Portugal.”  More with Jack Jones with “Call Me Irresponsible” and big daddy Burl Ives with “Call Me Mister In Between”.  Crank em' up at

The Neon Beat - 8.27.21

On the Neon Beat (Show 58R6)  Catherine Starks, otherwise remembered as 1950's pop singer Kay Starr opens this hour with a toe tappin' version of the song “Side By Side”.  Then we bring in songwriter Johnny Mercer with the singers to do a song called “Personality”.  Listen to Dean Martin as we sail “Under the Bridges of Paris”.  Leroy Anderson leads off our instrumental offerings with a song used as the theme for the TV game show “To Tell the Truth”.  Hear the Glenn Miller Orchestra with a swinging rendition of “Little Brown Jug” and turn up the orchestra of Paul Mauriat with the theme from “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”.  We'll team up Bing Crosby with the Andrews Sisters for “Pistol Packin' Mama”.  Then we team up Steve Lawrence with his wife Eydie for “Besame Mucho”. (with ensuing translation by Eydie).  Enjoy Nat King Cole with a lovely version of a Charlie Chaplain song followed up with Sarah Vaughan singing a fine Gershwin standard.  We'll remember that island of romance as we listen to “26 Miles” sung by the Four Preps.  Next we'll play what was the first major charting hit song for Connie Francis. Then you can “Help Yourself” to Tom Jones.  We'll spin a country-esk set with Patsy Cline singing a swinging remix of the song “Walking After Midnight” from the 1985 movie about the woman called “Sweet Dreams”. Glen Campbell is next with his 1968 hit record “Wichita Lineman” and then we'll wrap er' up with a fun 1965 memory by Roger Miller.  (Me and the kids still sing it in the car on road trips)  More with Andy Williams, Sarah Vaughan, and Sammy Davis Jr.  Listen and glisten.

On The Neon Beat (show 57R6)  Big band leader Vaughn Monroe launches this segment for us with his signature hit song, “Racing with the Moon.”  Benny Goodman follows up with a fun Johnny Mercer standard, “Goody Goody.”  Next we raise the temperature in the room with Peggy Lee's “Fever.”  Then we listen to a hit record that defined an era:  Nat King Cole's “Unforgettable.”  Catch some great theatre and film music with Ella Fitzgerald singing a scorching number from “Kiss Me Kate” and Andy Williams with the theme from “Love Story.”  Enjoy some more big band with Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra with “Topsy!” followed up with a Rat Pack number featuring Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.  Enjoy two songs to get ya smiling beginning with Johnny Mathis with “A Certain Smile.”  Then Karen and Richard Carpenter do a little country flavoured song called “Sweet Sweet Smile.”  Crank up Walter Wanderley on the Hammond B-3 Organ for his 1966 hit offering of “A Summer Samba.”  Tony Bennett sings another Broadway favorite from “Gypsy.”  More songs with Dean Martin, Pat Boone and Bing Crosby.  Go to:
